The Digilent Analog Discovery 3 USB Oscilloscope, Waveform Generator, Logic Analyzer is a multifunctional test and measurement device. Also known as the AD3, it serves as a digital oscilloscope, logic analyzer, waveform generator, and pattern generator, among other functions.
The device is compatible with the versatile WaveForms software, which is supported by Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. This allows the Analog Discovery 3 to be utilized in various environments, including labs, fieldwork, and even at home, eliminating the need for a traditional benchtop and costly test instruments.
The Analog Discovery 3 is a portable, USB-powered device, similar to its predecessor. However, it now features an upgraded USB-C connection. Its lightweight and compact design makes it an ideal tool for engineers on the go.
The device boasts an expanded buffer size, allowing for more data to be transmitted through the waveform generator and received through the mixed signal (analog and digital) oscilloscope. It also offers an increased sampling rate of up to 125 MS/s on all channels and a more robust power supply (up to 800 mA). These larger buffers enable the capture of longer records at high resolution and facilitate more complex AWG signals. The device also supports modulated AWG signals, phase modulation, and summation.
The Analog Discovery 3 is built on the next-generation Xilinx FPGA, which allows for additional features and future enhancements over time with software updates. It also provides access to new powerful features in WaveForms, such as the FIR (finite impulse response) Filter.
This feature, through optional FIR filters on Oscilloscope input channels, can reduce high-frequency noise that could potentially affect measurement quality. The device also supports digital loopback of captured signals to the AWG, both filtered and unfiltered. AWG output signals can now also be recaptured through digital loopback and displayed alongside signals returned from a circuit under test.
The Analog Discovery 3 is compatible with all adapters and accessories from its previous version, as well as the new Audio Adapter+. These accessories, such as the Transistor Tester, Impedance Analyzer, and Breadboard Adapter, enhance the functionality of the device.
The device offers two differential channels with 14-bit resolution at up to 125 MS/s per channel with a +/-25 V input range, 30+ MHz bandwidth with BNC Adapter, and user-configurable input filters and lock-in amplifier. It also features an Arbitrary Waveform Generator with two channels with 14-bit resolution at up to 125 MS/s per channel with a +/-5 V output range and 12 MHz bandwidth with BNC Adapter.
The Logic Analyzer and Pattern Generator offer 16 digital I/O channels at up to 125 MS/s per channel with individually-configurable 3.3 V digital inputs and outputs, and 5 V tolerant inputs. The device also includes programmable power supplies ranging from 0.5 V to 5 V and -0.5 V to -5 V with up to 800 mA per channel when used with an auxiliary power source.
Additional software instruments include a Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, Impedance Analyzer, Protocol Analyzer, virtual digital I/O such as buttons, switches, LEDs, Data logging, Voltmeter, in-app scripting, SDK for hardware control in C, C++, Python, and other languages, and support for LabVIEW and MATLAB.
Note: To achieve maximum bandwidth, the use of the BNC Adapter for Analog Discovery is required.
