The Flapper Drones Flapper Nimble+ Starter Kit is an innovative tailless flapping wing robot, recognized as the first of its kind to be commercially available. Developed by Flapper Drones, this platform is designed for use in academic and research settings, as well as by drone show operators, to explore the field of bioinspired aerial robotics. The robot's soft flapping wings generate a natural and unobtrusive sound, ensuring safety for both humans and objects while maintaining high responsiveness and agility.
This ready-to-fly kit requires no tools for assembly, allowing users to quickly attach the wings and begin operation. The Flapper Nimble+ is capable of hovering, flying in various directions, and performing maneuvers such as turning, climbing, and descending. Its bioinspired wing actuation is powered by brushless drive motors and coreless digital servos equipped with precision metal gears, providing precise control for enjoyable manual flight experiences.
The kit includes a dedicated 2.4 GHz transmitter for precise control, and a smartphone application is available for those who prefer a more portable option. The Crazyflie Bolt flight control board, along with an application microcontroller and a radio and power management microcontroller, ensures reliable performance. The robot is equipped with a 3-axis gyro, a 3-axis accelerometer, and a high-precision pressure sensor, all of which contribute to its stability and control.
The Flapper Nimble+ is compatible with the Crazyflie ecosystem and supports open-source firmware and libraries for high-level control. It offers features such as wireless firmware updates, telemetry, and the potential for autonomous flight with additional expansion decks. Users can customize the robot's appearance by creating unique body shells, decorating the wings, or adding light effects with RGB LEDs. Although designed primarily for indoor use, the robot can also operate outdoors in low wind conditions.
