The Pololu Carrier w/ Sharp GP2Y0D810Z0F Distance Sensor - 2cm to 10cm offers a great way to detect the presence of nearby objects quickly. Note that these sensors will only tell you if there is an object within the detection range along their lines of sight; they will not tell you how far away the object is.
Great for use as a "beam break" type of sensor when you just want to know if something is in front of it or not. We used this for detecting when/where balls are in our robot for a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) robot. You just need power and a digital input pin to use.

This model has a very fast response. The little PCB carrier with its LED makes it calibration very easy. Ready to use to 3.3V or 5V interface.

cool little IR sensor
It took a little while to work out how to use this sensor but the technical data was really helpful and is a great edge detection IR for my RoverV2
