The Sherline Z-Axis DRO Handwheel Package (") is designed to enhance the functionality of a lathe equipped with a 2-axis digital readout (DRO) system by adding a Z-axis readout capability to a vertical milling column. This package is particularly beneficial for users who initially purchased a P/N 8200 2-axis lathe DRO and later decide to incorporate a vertical milling column into their setup.
The package includes a Z-Axis handwheel, an encoder unit, and a thrust collar, which collectively enable precise measurement and control of the Z-axis movement on the milling column. By integrating this package, the existing electronics box of the lathe DRO, which already accommodates a Z-axis input, can be utilized to provide accurate readouts for the milling column.
In this configuration, the lathe's original leadscrew axis, previously designated as the Z-axis, is reassigned to the Y-axis input, while the milling column assumes the role of the new Z-axis. This alignment adheres to standard machining practices, where the spindle's axis is typically referred to as the Z-axis, irrespective of its movement direction.
