The SparkFun BlueSMiRF V2 Bluetooth Wireless Serial UART Link (3.3-5V) serves as a robust wireless Bluetooth serial link, facilitating the replacement of serial cables with a wireless serial UART pipe. This device allows for seamless pairing, connection, and transmission of serial data across TX/RX lines, supporting a wide range of baud rates for serial streams. It boasts duplex transmission capabilities, ensuring accurate buffering, transmission, and delivery of data streams between two devices.
The BlueSMiRF V2 comes with several enhancements over its predecessor, maintaining compatibility with the pinout of previous Bluetooth Mates and USB-to-serial converters. This compatibility ensures ease of integration with a variety of development boards and high-precision GNSS breakout boards. To connect to another device, users will need to solder a 1x6 female header or striped wires to the provided PTHs.
For short-range applications, the BlueSMiRF V2 is ideal, offering reliable point-to-point communication within a 100ft (33m) indoor range. It can be paired with phones or computers for data viewing or remote control, and two BlueSMiRF units can be connected with the onboard PAIR button. The device also allows for remote configuration via a serial terminal app on a phone, with a simple AT command set to adjust settings such as baud rate and flow control. Additionally, it supports OTA updates for firmware enhancements.
The BlueSMiRF V2 includes an onboard voltage regulator, logic level shifting circuitry on all pins, and two built-in LEDs to indicate connection status and serial UART traffic. It primarily supports Bluetooth classic (Serial Port Profile or SPP) and also offers BLE protocol support for a wider range of devices.
Please note that the device requires an RS232 to TTL converter for higher voltages, and the voltage regulator can be bypassed with a jumper on the board. Bluetooth® classic (Serial Port Profile or SPP) is the primary supported protocol, compatible with Android phones, most desktops, and laptops, while BLE protocol support is available for all Apple phones.
